As many of you have probably heard, the horn of Eastern Africa-- specifically the nation of Somalia-- is currently suffering from a devastating famine. According to NBC, 11 million (other sources say up to 13 million) people in the Horn of Africa need food assistance. A full half of the Somalian population are in a situation of food crisis, according to the UN. The situation of starvation is severe. The AP released an article on August 5th that said that 29,000 children under the age of 5 had already died from the famine. That's the equivalent of about 85 American elementary schools being completely empty for the next five years, with about one more school becoming empty every week, because of disease, starvation, or exhaustion. We are losing an entire generation of Somalians.
What is perhaps most remarkable about this famine is the lack of media coverage and world attention paid to the crisis. We have been both astounded and disheartened by the media's half-hearted or nonexistent attempts at bringing attention to what is clearly a humanitarian crisis that affects us all. Somalia has been through this before-- 20 years ago, when we were just children-- and the world committed then to never let it happen again. Now too much of the world is turning a blind eye.
In response, we (Tina and Juliet) have decided to make an early release of the new studio recording of "Sincerity," written by Tina and produced by Juliet, and give all proceeds to responsible and proven organizations working against the famine in Eastern Africa right now. Our hope is that we can help spread the word about the famine and call on the world to respond as it should have done weeks ago. We hope to honor and remember those who are suffering while also providing a simple and easy way for all the people who like Tina's music to give generously. We ask for a minimum donation of $1.49 in return for the downloadable track, but if you are willing to give more, please do. We commit to giving your donation to Somalia in a timely fashion, as crises like this one require a quick response.
Click here to donate to the cause now and get "Sincerity" by Tina Colón. Lastly, we would ask each of you to pass this on to your own friends and family and coworkers. I beg you to be brave and bold in spreading the word and calling on people to help, and to do it now. Whether they choose to donate on their own, to be a part of this project, or to make a statement in some other way, the support of every single person matters. Even though the mass media response may be lacking, we can choose to stand with the next generation of Somalia.
